At The Coal Face

BMA

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) is Australia's largest coal miner and exporter, and the world's largest supplier to the seaborne coking coal market. BMA is a 50/50 alliance between the world's largest diversified resources company and the world's largest general trading company.

BMA owns and operates seven Bowen Basin mines in Queensland – Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Peak Downs, Saraji, Norwich Park, Gregory Crinum, and Blackwater – and the Hay Point terminal near Mackay.  They also manage the South Walker Creek and Poitrel mines, owned by BHP Billiton (80 percent) and Mitsui and Co. (20 percent). Growth projects such as Daunia and Caval Ridge will further strengthen BMA’s position in the near future.

Meeting The Challenge >>

BMA realised the need for a solution that could manage the extensive spectrum of environmental data across their operations and reduce data administration overload. The following areas were identified by BMA as being the most significant drivers for the new solution:

  • Legislative and regulatory compliance
  • Environment auditability and internal compliance
  • Cost reduction and dependence on external contractors for environmental data and services
  • Increased productivity of environmental reporting
  • Environmental incident responsiveness
  • Proactive monitoring of risks and trends
  • Facilitating continuous improvement in environmental management

After an extensive search to locate a solution that was the most capable and would best fit with the business, BMA chose to implement SRA’s web-enabled environmental data management system, EnviroSystm. The implemented solution, specifically configured to each facet of the BMA business, will “capture-collate-validate-warehouse” incoming data from any source, allow BMA to “monitor-audit-interrogate” the data and process and provide BMA with the “alert-report-dashboard-analyse” type of output to ensure the right decisions are made.

Comprehensive Benefits >>

BMA are now able to capture all of the necessary data to ensure that they comply with all legislative requirements. As a consequence, the business can be confident in maintaining their licence to operate whilst avoiding prosecution arising from any non-compliance or incident.

Protection of the ISO14001 and OHS Standards Accreditation are vital to BMA’s operation. Implementation of this solution allows the business to increase its ‘environmental data standards and performance measurement’ scores.

The safe storage of environmental data means that BMA’s dollar investment in data collection is protected. Zero data loss also eliminates the loss of financial investment in data collection.

Internal data management means that reliance on external contractors has been minimised. As a result, BMA has realised cost reductions in this area and can now own their data.

Data integrity is a strong characteristic of the solution, resulting in a reduction of time spent on rogue data fixes.

The business now finds that data can be analysed much easier and the time spent on consolidating their data at the company level has been reduced.

The amount of effort previously required to produce reports has decreased due to the reporting capabilities of the solution. BMA are now able to produce ad-hoc, monthly and annual reports far more efficiently and in a timely fashion. Duplication and rework of reports has become a thing of the past.

Automated alerts for exceedances are now allowing BMA to rapidly respond to environmental incidences resulting in a reduction of costs in potential remediation.

Integration with other corporate systems, e.g. SAP and GIS, allows BMA to take a complete approach to utilising all of their available information.
