BHP Billiton Iron Ore - Health, Safety, Environment, Community Database
The Client
BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world's leading suppliers of iron ore products and in 2001, shipped 71.3 million tonnes of ore and one million tonnes of briquettes to steel mills in Asia, Europe and Australia. Its operations include:
- Five mining operations;
- Port and processing facilities at Port Hedland;
- 696 kilometres of railway and a rail fleet of 48 locomotives and 2,224 carriages;
BHP Billiton has approximately 2,000 employees and 1,900 contractors in its Western Australian Iron Ore operations.
The Challenges
The objective of the Health-Safety-Environment-Community (HSEC) Data Management Project is to reduce the risk of the loss of HSEC data, currently stored in multiple spreadsheets, local databases and reports spread across many locations. The project is to ensure company defensibility, with compliance to legislative requirements. It is also to allow standardisation and integration of HSEC processes and systems and protect the ISO 14001 and OHS accreditations. It is intended to support proactive management control of risks and trends and reduce the risk of HSE incidents within BHPBIO.
Some cost reductions and productivity gains were identified but the key drivers for this project are risk avoidance and HSEC integration strategies.

The Solution
SRA is tasked with implementing the EnviroSys product, and training users to use the package including the ability to tailor the data and load additional history. The user base includes Perth, Port Hedland, Newman, and contract mine sites in the Pilbara region.
The scope of the project includes conversion of HSEC field and sample data for Mines, Rail, and Port to one central data management system.
The data types included within the scope are:
- Environmental;
- Piezo Register;
- Groundwater;
- Contaminated Sites;
- Surface Water;
- Weather Logger Data;
- BAM Dust File;
- Harbour Data;
- Sediments;
- Bore Water;
- Noise;
- HiVolData;
- Stormwater Data;
- Flora and Fauna;
- Hygiene;
- Occupational Hygiene Exposure Assessments data capture;
- Health Surveillance data capture;
- Other OH&S Data Management.
The goal of the system is to store all relevant data, electronic files, images, digital video and audio necessary to enable the production of the following reports:
- NPI (National Pollution Inventory);
- AER (Annual Environmental Reports);
- BHP Billiton HSEC Annual Report;
- BHP Billiton HSEC Questionnaire;
