National Land & Water Resources Audit
The Client
The National Land and Water Resources Audit (the Audit) is a program of the Natural Heritage Trust. It was set up in 1997 to improve land, water and vegetation management by providing better information to resource managers. The Audit is a partnership between all States, Territories and the Commonwealth, sharing and exchanging information and data on a vast array of topics to make the Audit one of the most ambitious programs on natural resources ever undertaken in Australia.
The Challenges
To gather information from all potential sources of vegetation information, both spatial and a-spatial, and create the technical model and infrastructure to support the data.

The Solution
SRA undertook all components of the National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) - the feasibility study, user requirements and technical specification of the system, and the subsequent development and implementation. An Oracle Forms system was developed using both Designer and Developer/2000 to store the Vegetation Attribute information. The data maintained has both spatial and a-spatial components, and requires conformance to the ASDI and ANZLIC standards.
The data types processed include:
- Point;
- Polygon;
- Raster / Image;
- ESRI Grids;
- Text;
- Documents.
The study included the reviewing of a number of internet sites, particularly related to the presentation, consolidation and collation of spatial and a-spatial information. Particular sites evaluated include the Australian Coastal Atlas.
